Bread is a matter of pride for Austria, with every village having its own bakery and all serving delightful rolls. Variations of bread include white bread roll (semmel) or rye bread (bauernbrot, vollkornbrot).
In Austria one should try the Carinthian specialty, kletzennudeln which is sweet noodles with soft cheese and dried pears fillings.
Salads made with pumpkin seed oil (kernöl) is a Styrian specialty of Austria.
Austria's Styrian kernöl is something you may also take home for its uniqueness.
A Viennese sweet specialty is the manner schnitten, besides powidl which is a wonderfully prune jam containing alcohol, unique to Austria.
Sachertorte, a chocolate torte with an apricot jam filling and chocolate icing is another of Austria's specialty. This delicious cake is served with sweetened cream (schlagobers) and available widely in many Viennese cafés.
